Nurturing the Whole Child with Second Step Early Learning

When families look for a preschool on the Upper East Side, they often look closely at early literacy milestones and math foundations. While these academic pillars are incredibly important, research shows that a child’s long-term success relies heavily on a different set of tools: emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and executive functioning.

When students enter kindergarten with the self-regulation and human skills taught with evidence-based second step early learning, they are fundamentally set up for success.

At The Bridge School, we don’t treat character development as an afterthought. Instead, we explicitly teach these critical life skills by embedding a gold-standard, research-validated framework directly into our daily schedule.

What is the Second Step Preschool Curriculum?

The second step preschool curriculum is an award-winning, research-validated program specifically designed to keep young learners engaged while building foundational social-emotional skills. Rather than assuming children will naturally figure out how to share, manage frustration, or navigate conflicts, this evidence-based framework approaches emotional intelligence exactly like reading or early math—as a set of skills that can be taught, practiced, and mastered.

By focusing heavily on the core pillars of emotional intelligence, this intentional curriculum is proven to:

  • Improve classroom behavior and reduce peer friction.

  • Increase focus, attention span, and working memory.

  • Boost long-term academic readiness for competitive kindergarten transitions.

Bringing SEL to Life: Our Daily Social-Emotional Block

To ensure these concepts truly stick, our educators host a dedicated Social-Emotional Block every day from 11:15 AM to 11:30 AM. During this fifteen-minute window, teachers bring the second step early learning curriculum to life through interactive multimedia resources, engaging songs, and beloved puppet characters.

Using puppets creates a playful, low-stakes environment where preschoolers feel incredibly safe exploring complex feelings. These characters act out relatable "social stories"—such as feeling left out on the playground or getting frustrated when a block tower falls. Through these narratives, our students learn to analyze social situations and practice problem-solving in a safe, play-based environment before they encounter those exact challenges in real life.

The Three Core Pillars of Second Step Early Learning

The second step curriculum preschool program targets three primary developmental areas that transform how children interact with the world around them.

1. Empathy & Respect

Before a child can show compassion, they must learn to understand the perspectives of others. Our students are explicitly taught how to notice physical cues—such as facial expressions, body posture, and situational context—to "read" how a peer is feeling. Labeling emotions like worry, frustration, or excitement helps children develop the vocabulary needed to build strong, empathetic relationships.

2. Emotion Management

Feeling big emotions is a natural part of being a preschooler. The goal isn't to stop children from feeling angry or disappointed, but to teach them what to do with those feelings. Through the curriculum, children use catchy songs, deep-breathing exercises, and physical movement to practice practical "calm-down" strategies. These routines help them pause, breathe, and regain control of their impulses.

3. Problem-Solving

When a conflict arises over a shared toy or a spot in line, young children often react impulsively. We teach students a step-by-step problem-solving method that builds cognitive flexibility. Children learn to:

  1. State the problem without blaming others.

  2. Brainstorm multiple solutions (e.g., trading, sharing, or taking turns).

  3. Choose the fairest solution so everyone wins.

The Bridge Advantage: Skills for a Bright Future

By merging the rigorous framework of second step early learning with our warm, supportive campus culture, we give our students a distinct competitive edge.

They don't just leave our classrooms knowing their letter sounds and numbers; they transition to the "Next Chapter" knowing how to listen actively, collaborate in groups, assert their needs politely, and bounce back from challenges. These are the true "human skills" that selective public and private kindergarten admissions committees look for on the Upper East Side.
