Early Literacy

At The Bridge School, our approach to early literacy is rooted in neurolinguistic research and the science of reading. We recognize that the preschool years represent a critical window for language acquisition.

 

Our curriculum is specifically designed to transform natural curiosity into a robust foundation for reading, vocabulary, and communication.

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness

The cornerstone of our literacy program is the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum. We focus on the "ear training" necessary for children to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) that make up the English language.

-"Sounds in Motion": Kinesthetic Learning We go beyond traditional auditory drills by incorporating dynamic "sounds in motion" techniques. This kinesthetic approach connects sound patterns with specific physical movements, ensuring that students are physically engaged while they learn. By "chopping" syllables or "sliding" sounds together, children build stronger neural pathways for sound recognition. -Building Phonics and Vocabulary Through systematic instruction, we bridge the gap between spoken sounds and printed letters. Our evidence-based phonics instruction is balanced with a "whole language" approach, ensuring that children not only decode words but also understand their meaning and context, rapidly expanding their expressive vocabulary.

Emergent Writing

Writing is a complex cognitive and physical task. Our emergent writing program breaks this process down into manageable, joyful steps. We believe that a child’s first "story" told through drawing and tracing is a vital milestone in their academic journey.

-Fine Motor Development: Before a child masters a pencil, they must develop the small muscles in their hands. We use interactive techniques like clay modeling, finger painting, and sensory bins to build the strength needed for a lifetime of writing. -Concepts of Print: Our students learn how books work—understanding that we read from left to right, top to bottom, and that letters combine to form meaningful ideas. -Storytelling: We encourage children to dictate their thoughts to teachers, helping them see the direct connection between spoken words and the written page.

Handwriting Without Tears

To ensure that letter formation is a stress-free experience, we utilize the Handwriting Without Tears program. This curriculum is famous for its "tear-free" philosophy, which replaces repetitive worksheets with multisensory tools.

By using wooden pieces, slate chalkboards, and "Wet-Dry-Try" techniques, we make letter formation a tactile and visual game. This approach minimizes frustration and ensures that children develop a proper "tripod grip" and consistent letter orientation from the very beginning.

The Daily Literacy Block: 9:05 – 9:35 AM

Every morning, our students engage in a focused Early Literacy Block. This 30-minute session is the heartbeat of our language environment, combining three essential modes of learning:

-Direct Instruction: High-energy, teacher-led sessions introducing new phonemes or storytelling concepts. -Guided Practice: Small group activities where teachers provide "serve and return" feedback as children practice "sounds in motion." -Independent Exploration: Time for children to engage with our classroom libraries and writing centers, fostering a personal love for books.
